Here is something I just had to write since I am such a fan girl. SEVEN REASONS I LOVE STEVE SCHMIDT. With a grand 25 followers I put it on Twitter. By the next day I had nearly 4,000 Likes and almost 3,000 on Medium. Amazing.
SEVEN REASONS I LOVE STEVE SCHMDIT
There I’ve said it. For years I’d watched Steve Schmidt being trotted out as everyone’s favorite Republican strategist. As a lifelong Democrat, I agreed with almost nothing he said but loved the way he said it. He made me believe he believed in the cause and because I respected him, I actually listened to his arguments. Not that he won me over but he got me to listen.
And now he’s done a 180. He looks leaner and meaner and well…I love Steve Schmidt. Here’s why:
1-He jumped ship
This is huge. A lifelong Republican strategist, Steve left the party. Maybe not forever. He’s not calling himself a Democrat but he had the courage to cut ties to what had been his bread and butter. To recognize you’re on the wrong side of the good fight and then do something about it? Amazing.
2-His Passion
Professionals are supposed to present opinions in an even-handed way. Steve doesn’t think so. This is a man who does not do things half way. He sounds impassioned. He’s angry. He’s annoyed. We know it because he shows it. Steve is not going gently into any good night.
3-His lengthy rants
When he’s pissed, he’s pissed. And he’s usually pissed. And he’ll tell you why in lengthy speeches that could rally troops into battle. I used to shout at the television. When Steve’s on I have someone shouting for me. Show hosts don’t interrupt Steve Schmidt. They know good TV when they hear it.
4-He says what I’m thinking
Yes, name calling is the lowest form of dis’ and one which He Who Shall Not be Named uses often. But in this climate we need someone calling it out. Don’t get me started on how many times I’ve heard reporters use every known synonym for “ lie” and “liar.” But Steve goes balls to the wall. Here, one of his finest rants…
“When you listen to the President, these are the musings of an imbecile. An idiot. And I don’t use those words to name call. I use them because they are the precise words of the English language to describe his behavior. His comportment. His actions. We’ve never seen a level of incompetence, a level of ineptitude so staggering on a daily basis by anybody in the history of the country whose ever been charged with substantial responsibilities.
I would like to have this needlepointed.
5-The Lincoln Project
Schmidt is one of the forces behind that project. From all those years working for Republicans, he and his colleagues know their audience. And know how to speak to them.
6-Steve doesn’t laugh
He doesn’t even smile that much. Steve looks serious as dirt. For me that’s the proper gravitas for today.
7- His Kitchen
I love his whole house. He is the only talking head that gives the audience real eye candy in the form of a stunningly decorated residence. And he changes his locale so I can see many aspects of this spectacular home. But it’s the kitchen where he usually presides. I love the gleaming counter and brick walls and wall art. I love that on one night Steve left two random pineapples on his counter leading Ari Melber to suggest he add a cocoanut to the arrangement.
So, here’s to you Steve Schmidt. I know nothing about your personal life but I hope you and whoever’s with you remains safe and healthy. I hope you continue to speak your mind and forge ahead with an independent spirit. I hope you keep working for the just cause no matter on which side of the political spectrum it’s found.
And so for all the above….I love Steve Schmidt.
